CHEN courses

Q: I would like to register for the Biological Engineering Laboratory for Fall of 2008 but I cannot find this course listing anywhere on PLUS.  Is this course being offered and, if so, how do I register?

A: Yes, the Biological Engineering Laboratory is being offered in the Fall of 2008.  The course number is CHEN 4130-003.  Note that only section 003 is the Biological Engineering Laboratory, the other two sections are Senior Lab.

Q: I am unable to register for Junior Lab (CHEN 3130).  Why is this so?

A: For the Spring 2008 CHEN 3130, you must register in the Chemical Engineering Department main office.

Q: How do I register for the Biokinetics and Bioseparations courses for Spring 2008?  I cannot find the registration information for these courses.

A: You will register for the traditional Separations (CHEN 3220) and Kinetics (CHEN 4330) courses, and 2/3 of the way through the semester the class will split into the traditional and biological courses, but will be under the same course numbers.

Q: I recently changed majors to ChE during the fall of my sophomore year, and I missed taking Chemical Engineering Material & Energy Balances (CHEN 2120). Does that put off my graduation by an entire year?

A: Not necessarily, but it is likely to put it off by at least a semester. You will probably take CHEN 2120 in the Spring and MCEN 3021 (Fluids) next fall. Also, CHEN 3200 (Fluids) may be offered in the Summer semester. Consult an advisor.

Q: If I transfer from CHEN to CBEN late as an undergraduate, do I have to go back and take Foundations of Bioengineering?

A: Yes, Foundations of Bioengineering is a required course for the B.S. degree in Chemical and Biological Engineering.

Q: Chemical Engineering Materials (CHEN 4440) is not being offered this semester but is a required course for the CHEN degree.  Are there any alternative courses I can take?

A: Yes, Polymer Engineering (CHEN 4460) is a suitable alternative to CHEN 4440 and these courses are interchangeable.  Note that Biomaterials (CHEN 4805) is required of all CBEN students for the CBEN degree, but Biomaterials can not be used in place of either CHEN 4440 or CHEN 4460 for the CHEN degree.

Q: Since the senior thesis sequence is 4 credit hours total, can the final 2 credit hours be applied towards the 6 required hours of CHEN 3000+ technical electives?

A: Yes, they can.
